Greendale Construction Celebrate 20 Years...
From its small beginnings twenty years ago, Dorset based Chartered Building Company Greendale Construction has built an enviable reputation in establishing itself as an integral part of the business community in the South. Greendale Construction has come a long way since Directors Rob Hooker and Chris Kane to set up their construction company, in the middle of a recession in the spare bedroom of Rob’s small flat in Poole back in 1990.
Twenty years later, Greendale Construction are one of the founding members of the prestigious CIOB’s Chartered Building Company scheme, and employ 50 staff including 6 apprentices.
They have built up an enviable client list working for many Blue Chip companies and local authorities across the region. They now operate from Old Generator House in Bourne Valley, Poole which is a substantial Victorian listed building with offices over three floors, containing a large conference room, ample parking and a terrace – just perfect for their 20th celebrations.
The Business Plan that Chris and Rob drew up in 1990 still stands in many respects today. Their original mission of handing over projects on time, producing the best quality work and providing good value remain in bedded in the ethos of the company. Since 1990 Greendale has built its reputation on the quality of its work, its workforce, it’s business relationships and in delivering projects on budget and on time.
To say the company has become woven into the fabric of the community it serves is not an over statement. Over the past two decades Greendale has successfully worked on many public and private sector projects including schools, colleges, hospitals as well as a number of iconic buildings which include Avonbourne School, Bournemouth Town Hall, Hotel Du Vin Poole, Highcliffe Castle, Poole Museum, and The Pavilion Theatre. Greendale was chosen to build the first ever national RNLI memorial at the charity’s headquarters in Poole and is another feather in its cap.
Most recently, Greendale was awarded a £3.9 million contract to be principal contractor for the Durlston World Heritage Gateway Project in Dorset. It involves the refurbishment of the 19th century castle, which includes the construction of a new visitor centre, shop and craft workshop at the gateway to the Jurassic Coast and is scheduled for completion in Summer 2011. Director Rob Hooker says, “Despite the economic downturn Greendale has maintained its current workforce and has a healthy order book for 2010. Margins are much tighter than previous years and as a general rule our clients go out to competitive tender rather than negotiation in this current economic climate. We are pleased to remain competitive and look forward to winning further projects as the year unfolds. Reaching our 20th birthday was a proud moment and it was great to share our celebrations with colleagues and friends who have supported us over the last 20 years” “We have always held the belief that people are our strongest asset and have always invested in our staff development and see no need for this to change in uncertain times.” says Rob. Director Chris Kane goes onto say, “The rise and rise of Greendale in the last twenty years is very much people orientated, Greendale stands tall and proud as one of the few companies across the United Kingdom and the ONLY Construction Company in the South West to have been awarded the Silver Investors in People standard. Supported by the government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the award is in recognition of the investment the company makes to its employees, we are proud to have this honour bestowed upon us, which would have been impossible to achieve without the dedication of our valued team.”
