Special Guests Help Charity Founder Celebrate 100th Birthday

Phyllis Edwards, the founder of Dorset charity Diverse Abilities, turned 100 on Sunday 5 November and celebrated with friends and family at Two Cedars in Broadstone, the residential care home that she has lived for five years.

Two Cedars held a tea party to celebrate her special birthday and all her guests enjoyed sandwiches, cake and a glass of prosecco to toast the birthday lady.

Runners Light Up The Night

Runners Light Up the Night for Diverse Abilities

Poole Park was glowing on Saturday as hundreds of runners took part in the first Dorset Neon Run, in aid of Diverse Abilities, raising over £25,000 for the charity that supports children and adults living with disabilities in Dorset.

Over 350 people glowed and lit up the park as they ran the 5k course donning their neon paint, tutus, glow sticks and bracelets.

Tree-cycle Scheme is a Huge Success for Diverse Abilities

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, recently raised £3,469 by collecting Christmas trees for recycling.

Over the course of a weekend in January, 447 Christmas trees were collected from local residents in Dorset after they pre-booked their collections making a minimum of £5 donation per tree.

Volunteers gave their time and lent their vans to collect trees from Poole, Bournemouth and other areas of Dorset.

Local Man Dedicates Half Marathon Record To Late Champion

Local man Lee Thomas, 32 from Poole, has set a world record by running a half marathon in Antarctica in the fastest time.

Lee, who is working in Antarctic for ten weeks with TXI and KSAT, ran the Polar Night Run held in Tromso this January, which saw 1,800 people running on blue ice. To be able to run on the ice, Lee and the other runners had to screw their trainers into a studded base. For Lee, this was the first time he had ever competed in a half marathon, let alone ran on ice!

On Wednesday 14 December, staff from Diverse Abilities took to the phones with a specific goal – to call everyone who has supported the charity throughout 2016 and simply say ‘thank you’.

Throughout the day - dubbed Thank You Day - the various teams based at the Dorset charity’s Poole HQ endeavoured to call each person who had raised money, took part in a charity event or simply donated to Diverse Abilities over the course of the previous 12 months, to personally express gratitude for their act of kindness.

Charity’s Brand-New Respite Home Officially Opens

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is delighted to announce that its brand-new children’s respite home is officially opened and has been named Lily’s Place.

Over a year ago the charity, that supports children and adults with disabilities and their families, launched the Lilypad Appeal and thanks to many local supporters the respite home, formally known as Smithers, has now been renovated and redeveloped to create a brand-new space.

Grannies Complete Channel Return Crossing Charity Swim

Two grandmothers from Poole in Dorset, who dubbed themselves the Gangsta Grannies, are believed to be the first ever team of two to swim across the Channel and back, following their recent charity Channel Swim return crossing from Dover to France.

Ali Budynkiewicz, 58, and Lisa North, 48, completed their return crossing from Dover to France in just over 31 hours, swimming two-hour rotation shifts, in a bid to raise money for BCHA (Bournemouth Churches Housing Association) to help the charity support the children of women affected by domestic violence in its Bournemouth Refuge.

£60,000 Granted to Diverse Abilities

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, is thrilled to have received a grant of £60,000 from the St James’s Place Foundation, the charitable arm of the St. James’s Place Wealth Management Group.

The grant will specifically help towards funding a vital role within the charity’s children team for a period of three years. This role is extremely vital, as without it the charity’s holiday and after school activities for children with disabilities and their siblings would not be available.

Father And Family To Take On 80 Mile Bike Ride To Raise Funds For Disabled Sons Future

Bobby was born on 11th may 2013, he was motionless and quite floppy at first and although he was rushed out of the delivery room, he soon returned and his Mum and Dad were told that he was 'just a lazy boy'. He couldn't quite get the hang of feeding, bottle or breast, so his mum and dad had to use a syringe to feed him milk. Bobby and his Mum remained in hospital for 6 weeks in the pediatric intensive care unit while they ran extra tests.
